New bird species found in Japan for first time in 45 years A new bird species has been discovered in Kagoshima Prefecture, researchers said on March 18. The Tokara leaf warbler, found in the Tokara Islands, was given the scientific name Phylloscopus tokaraensis.

It is the first bird in Japan to be given a scientific name since 1981. It was long thought to be the same species as the Iijima’s leaf warbler, which has been known to breed in Tokyo’s Izu Islands. However, the international team of researchers found it was genetically different*.
